Maple Leafs Assist Totals through January 19, 2010 (after 51 Games)

In addition to tracking scoring chances, I've also been recording assists of various types, primarily setup assists and screen assists. A Setup Assist is awarded to one player on each goal, the man who cleanly passed or dumped the puck toward the goal scorer in a way that it sets up a goal, and it is also handed out in the case of tipped/deflected shots to the original shooter. You may call this the "Savard" if you like; this is kind of like how assists are awarded in basketball. Screen Assists are given out when a player positions himself directly in front of the goal so as to block the goalie from getting a clear look at the puck as it is shot. These are, of course, not included in the NHL's official assist totals.

In addition to those two, I've also included rebound assists and total assists, as officially tabulated by the NHL scorers, in the table below for posterity. Kaberle leads in setups while Mickey Grabs has the most screen assists on the Leafs at 3, go figure.

Just found this post. Interesting work. You might be interested to know I've been doing similar work in Edmonton on the Oilers for the last two season.

I call these extra assists "unofficial assists," and I give them to any player who makes a key contribution on a goal -- such as a pass, screen or hit -- that doesn't give them an official assists.

Here is my first post on the matter

And here is a more recent few posts ...
