Both teams combined for only three chances in the first period, that might be a record but I'm not positive. It wasn't fun to watch, but there are worse things that could happen than an extremely low event period, just ask Oiler fans.
The Leafs had a couple of 2-on-1 chances in the opening frame, but finished them both fairly soft, merely shooting straight-on instead of trying anything remotely creative (the shooter on one chance was John Mitchell, the other Rickard Wallin... so about what you'd expect). It seems like there was quite a few odd-man-rushes despite the relatively lower amount of chances in this contest.
